A visible plate ties a vehicle to its registered owner. On a for-sale listing or a photo on social media, it opens the door to cold-calls, targeting of a valuable car and scammers reusing your ad. Thirty seconds of blurring avoids all of it.
Is a license plate personal data?
In the EU, yes. France's data authority (CNIL) treats a number plate as personal data: through the vehicle registry it can lead back to the owner. A private seller can post a photo of their car, but should mask the plate first. A business showing customer vehicles — garage, dealer, rental — falls under the GDPR, where breaches carry fines up to €20 million or 4% of worldwide annual turnover (Article 83).
Blur, pixelation or black bar — which actually holds?
Gaussian blur and pixelation make a plate unreadable to the eye, but a neural network can sometimes reconstruct what's hidden — 57.75% of the time in a 2016 study, versus 2.5% for random guessing. For a plate you want truly unreadable, a black bar or an emoji overwrites the pixels: there's nothing left to rebuild. Either way the export rewrites the file, with no original image hidden underneath.

Sellers on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and eBay first. Then garages and dealers showing customer cars, dashcam and CCTV clips going online, enthusiasts posting their car on Instagram or Reddit, real-estate listings with a car parked out front, and YouTube or TikTok creators filming on the street.

Is the blur reversible?+
A black bar or emoji overwrites the pixels — nothing to recover. Light gaussian blur or pixelation can, in some cases, be partly reconstructed by AI. For a plate, raise the strength or use the black bar.
