Blur a license plate

Selling your car online or posting a vehicle photo? Hide the license plate in seconds to protect your privacy — right in your browser.

Fast

Draw a rectangle over the plate, pick blur or black bar, export. Done.

Plate + face

Also hide a passerby's face or a shop window reflection in the same photo.

No upload

Your photo stays on your device. Ideal for personal images.

Quality kept

Export keeps the original resolution; only masked areas change.

Why hide your plate before posting?

A visible plate ties a vehicle to its registered owner. On a for-sale listing or a photo on social media, it opens the door to cold-calls, targeting of a valuable car and scammers reusing your ad. Thirty seconds of blurring avoids all of it.

Is a license plate personal data?

In the EU, yes. France's data authority (CNIL) treats a number plate as personal data: through the vehicle registry it can lead back to the owner. A private seller can post a photo of their car, but should mask the plate first. A business showing customer vehicles — garage, dealer, rental — falls under the GDPR, where breaches carry fines up to €20 million or 4% of worldwide annual turnover (Article 83).

Blur, pixelation or black bar — which actually holds?

Gaussian blur and pixelation make a plate unreadable to the eye, but a neural network can sometimes reconstruct what's hidden — 57.75% of the time in a 2016 study, versus 2.5% for random guessing. For a plate you want truly unreadable, a black bar or an emoji overwrites the pixels: there's nothing left to rebuild. Either way the export rewrites the file, with no original image hidden underneath.

Who needs to blur a plate?

Sellers on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and eBay first. Then garages and dealers showing customer cars, dashcam and CCTV clips going online, enthusiasts posting their car on Instagram or Reddit, real-estate listings with a car parked out front, and YouTube or TikTok creators filming on the street.

Blur a plate in 4 steps

  1. 1
    Open your photo

Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP file into the tool. Nothing goes to a server — it all runs in your browser.

  2. 2
Draw a rectangle over the plate

Trace the area over the plate. Auto-detect only targets faces; you draw the plate yourself, which avoids misses on a tilted plate, a motorbike or a window reflection.

  3. 3
Pick a black bar or strong blur

For a listing, the black bar is cleanest and safest. Heavy pixelation stays subtle. Push the strength until the number is gone.

  4. 4
    Export as PNG or JPG

The file keeps its original resolution; only the masked area changes. Zoom to 100% and check nothing is readable before you post.

Frequently asked questions

Is blurring a plate free?

Yes. Blurring is free and needs no signup. The free export carries a small Make Blur watermark in the corner; the Pro version removes it — but the plate itself is masked either way.

How do I blur a plate on an iPhone photo?

Save it as JPG first: on iPhone, Settings > Camera > Formats > 'Most Compatible', or share the photo, which converts it to JPG. The tool reads JPG, PNG and WebP.

Is the blur reversible?

A black bar or emoji overwrites the pixels — nothing to recover. Light gaussian blur or pixelation can, in some cases, be partly reconstructed by AI. For a plate, raise the strength or use the black bar.

Should I blur my own car's plate?

No legal obligation for a private individual, but it's recommended before a public listing: your plate links the car to your identity and makes targeted cold-calls and scams easier.

What about a dashcam video?

The video tool applies a fixed rectangle throughout the clip, which works when a plate stays in place. It does not automatically track moving plates; use a dedicated tracker for dashcam footage.

Do GIMP or Photoshop do it better?

They can, but you have to install the software and remember to flatten the image: a plain, unflattened blur layer stays reversible. Here the export is already flattened, faster, and skips that trap.
