In short: to blur a face in CapCut you duplicate the clip onto an overlay, apply a blur/mosaic effect, add a circle mask over the face, and keyframe that mask to follow the face — then delete CapCut's logo outro before export. It works, but the keyframing is slow and the blur drifts on movement. The faster path is to let a tool detect the faces on every frame and blur them automatically, which is what the tool further down this page does.
How to blur a face in CapCut, step by step
This is the method every CapCut tutorial converges on, because it's the one the app actually supports. Nothing here is auto — you're doing the tracking by hand.
- 1Import the clip and duplicate it onto an overlayAdd your video to the timeline, then add the same file again as an overlay (Overlay → Add overlay) sitting on the track above. You blur the copy on top and let the sharp original show through everywhere else.
- 2Apply a blur or mosaic effect to the overlayWith the overlay selected, open Effects → Video effects and search “blur” or “mosaic”, then apply it to the overlay clip. This blurs the whole overlay for now — the mask in the next step is what confines it to the face.
- 3Add a circle mask over the faceSelect the overlay, tap Mask → Circle, and drag/scale it over the face. Now only the masked patch of the blurred overlay is visible, so just the face is blurred.
- 4Keyframe the mask to follow the faceHere's the work. Move the playhead to the start, tap the keyframe diamond, then step forward and drag the mask onto the face again — over and over, every time the face moves. CapCut interpolates between your keyframes; you're hand-animating the mask along the whole shot.
- 5Export — and delete the CapCut endingBefore exporting, delete the auto-added CapCut outro clip at the end of the timeline (the one with the logo), or it rides along on your video. Then export at your chosen resolution.
Where the CapCut method hurts
None of this is a knock on CapCut as an editor — it's a video editor, not a face-blur tool, and masking is a general-purpose feature it happens to let you repurpose. But four things bite, every time.
A mask doesn't follow a face on its own. You set a keyframe, nudge the mask, set another, nudge again — for a 15-second clip where someone is moving, that's dozens of manual keyframes. Miss a stretch and the blur simply sits in the wrong place.
Between two keyframes CapCut moves the mask in a straight line at a constant speed. Real heads don't. On a turn, a step or a head-tilt the circle slides off the face for a few frames and reveals exactly what you were hiding — the failure everyone notices only after export.
CapCut appends its own logo outro to new projects. You can delete it, but it's easy to forget, and it reappears when you start a fresh project. It's not a stamp across your footage, but it is a CapCut-branded tail on a video you wanted to look like yours.
Menus, effect names and the mask UI differ between the phone app and CapCut for desktop, so a tutorial you followed on one won't line up on the other. Keyframing a mask on a phone screen, with a fingertip, over a moving face, is genuinely fiddly.
